first two weeks in Nairobi....speed geeking and crane sighting

Hi from Nairobi where I'm working for three months with UNICEF in Kenya. I flew in in late July and immediately started work with an energetic team of Education people who work on a variety of projects related to system development and support to children in dry and arid lands and in refugee camps. I hope to visit some of these sites in the next few weeks to get an idea of how things work. I'm impressed by the innovative ways in which the group uses SMS to collect data and feed back results in real time to people in remote areas. It's heartwarming to be asked to work with such talented people. During the first week there was a mid year review of work which was set up as a speed geeking exercise. Each sector group had about 5 mins x 13 sessions to convince other staff members of the efficiency and effectiveness of the work completed so far in the office and the field projects. No boring power points here!

On weekends I'm aiming to get to know Nairobi better, so last Saturday I went on a trip to a tea farm at Limuru called Kiambethu Farm, established in 1910 by some English settlers. It's still in the same family and the tour was excellent, including as it did, a walk in some remnant forest and a farm cooked lunch.
That night I went to hear Jane Goodall speak at a dinner for the organisation called GRASP (Great Apes Survival Partnership). It was at this event I saw these amazing Crown Cranes. This week at the UN campus at Gigiri I saw some more, including crane chicks. The green vegetation around Nairobi is wonderful and I hope to see more and more of it.
Nakutakia siku njema!  which means have a nice day in Swahilii.
